A very sad day.” President of Ireland Michael D Higgins stated that MacGowan was one of “music’s greatest lyricists” and his songs were “perfectly crafted poems.” British TV presenter Piers Morgan shared on X that he was an “Irish punk legend, genius…” MacGowan’s Family shared a statement on The Pogues’ official Instagram saying that on his deathbed “prayers and last rites were read.”
