MacGowan’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, wrote: “Shane will always be the light that I hold before me and the measure of my dreams…” Australian musician Nick Cave expressed that he “was a true friend and the greatest songwriter of his generation. A very sad day.” President of Ireland Michael D Higgins stated that MacGowan was one of “music’s greatest lyricists” and his songs were “perfectly crafted poems.” British TV presenter Piers Morgan shared on X that he was an “Irish punk legend, genius…” MacGowan’s Family shared a statement on The Pogues’ official Instagram saying that on his deathbed “prayers and last rites were read.”
