The Polish version of music talent show ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar’ came under fire after two contestants performed in blackface. Kuba Szmajkowski performed ‘Humble’ dressed as Kendrick Lamar, while Pola Gonciarz sang Beyoncé’s ‘If I Were A Boy.’ Szmajkowski was also scrutinized for repeatedly using the n-word during his performance. Many social media users blasted the show, labeling the use of blackface as racist and offensive. The show faced a similar controversy in 2021, with producers claiming they “try to show great performances as close to the original as possible.” “The intention of each star performing on the show is to recreate the original performance in the most precise manner, while honoring the original artist,” stressed the producers. Neither Szmajkowski, Gonciarz or the show have responded publicly to the criticism.
