Updates from Indiana’s loss to Ohio State

Welcome to a new season for the Indiana football team.

Last season, the Hoosiers went 4-8 (2-7 Big Ten), which marked its second consecutive losing season. Today IU starts off the season at Memorial Stadium with one of the best teams in college football, the Ohio State Buckeyes.

While OSU is a heavy favorite, both teams have some mystery going into Week 1. Indiana players know the starting QB (either Brendan Sorsby or Tayven Jackson), but coach Tom Allen kept that information in the locker room.

Well, it looks like the starter will be Sorsby.

For the Buckeyes, Kyle McCord will take the first offensive snaps. McCord beat out redshirt freshman Devin Brown, but coach Ryan Day said both will take snaps against the Hoosiers.

Zach Osterman, Michael Niziolek and Zion Brown will have analysis throughout, and we will have scoring updates, highlights and more. Please remember to refresh.

Final: Ohio State 23, Indiana 3

The offense didn’t get much going today, but the defense showed great promise at times. Linebacker Aaron Casey had 11 total tackles (9 solo). Andre Carter notched 2 tackles for loss.

Jaylin Lucas showed a lot of heart as a returner and had 2 punt returns for 51 yards. Lucas had 114 all-purpose yards.

Indiana had a productive drive that went 14 plays and 51 yards. It ended when Brendan Sorsby threw an incomplete pass intended for Andison Coby on 4th and 13 at the OSU 42-yard line.

Ohio State then marched down the field for a drive that lasted 14 plays and 54 yards. Jayden Fielding capped off the drive with a 22-yard field goal. Indiana’s defensive backs looked really strong this last drive and stopped numerous passes from being caught in the endzone.

End 3Q: Ohio State 20, Indiana 3

Tayven Jackson and Brendan Sorsby are a combined 4 for 9 with 38 yards through the air. The ground attack hasn’t gone much better as 6 players have rushed 27 times for 74 yards.

1:52 left 3Q: Ohio State Miyan Williams scores second TD

Indiana hung in it for a while but now Ohio State is pulling away. The Hoosier offense can’t get anything going and has gone 3 and out on both of its drives this half.

OSU went 6 plays for 88 yards on this particular drive that was topped off by a Miyan Williams 3-yard touchdown run.

Brendan Sorsby is back in at QB for IU.

6:42 left 3Q: Ohio State gets a field goal to extend lead

Jayden Fielding hit a 22-yard field goal to extend Ohio State’s lead. Senior IU linebacker Aaron Casey is having an impressive game with 7 total tackles and 5 solo tackles. He also has a tackle for loss.

Halftime: Ohio State 10, Indiana 3

Indiana’s defense showed great poise in the first half and stopped OSU from scoring a touchdown on that last drive of the second half. Jayden Fielding kicked a 40-yard field goal with 3 seconds left in the half.

:38 left 2Q: Indiana goes for it on 4th down and gets stopped

The Hoosiers were driving but it fell apart when they went for it on 4th and 4 on the Ohio State 39-yard line. The Buckeyes took advantage and drove into Indiana territory fairly quickly.

3:58 left 2Q: Indiana defense stops Ohio State offense with Devin Brown

Like Indiana, Ohio State is playing two quarterbacks today. Devin Brown didn’t attempt a pass in his first drive at QB. The Buckeyes went 3 and out.

6:20 left 2Q: Indiana converts wild field goal

Chris Freeman’s 42-yard field goal took a bit of a road trip but found its way through the uprights. The kick hit the right upright and bounced through. Indiana is on the board.

Ohio State 7, Indiana 3

10:18 left 2Q: Indiana intercepts Ohio State on 4th and 2

What a sequence of events for the Hoosiers. The Indiana defense held strong as Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord drifted to his right on 4th and 2 and threw off his back foot. Philip Dunnam snagged his first career interception to give Indiana the ball back.

End 1Q: Ohio State 7, Indiana 0

Both quarterbacks have seen action so far. Neither has done much through the air, but the running game has seen some progress.

Defensively, Louis Moore leads the team with 5 total tackles.

Tayven Jackson enters the game at QB for Indiana

Center Grove’s Tayven Jackson, the younger brother of basketball star Trayce Jackson-Davis, is in at quarterback for the Hoosiers. Jackson threw one incompletion during the drive that ended in a punt. Jaylin Lucas had a few nice runs during that drive that went 6 plays for 15 yards.

5:24 left 1Q: Indiana punts for second time

Indiana went 3 and out again. Brendan Sorsby threw an incomplete pass and ran for a yard. Jaylin Lucas also ran for 1 yard. The Buckeyes have been shutting down everything so far, but it’s early.

7:16 left 1Q: Buckeyes strike first

Indiana went 3 and out in their opening drive. Ohio State took over and drove down the field for an 11-play, 80-yard drive that was topped off by a Miyan Williams 7-yard touchdown run.
