ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Already showered with accolades, Atlanta icon Usher is set to receive another prestigious honor at the BET Awards in June, the channel announced Thursday.
Usher is the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award honoree, which celebrates artists who have “powerfully shifted culture and the entertainment industry,” BET said. Previous winners include powerhouses like Whitney Houston, Prince, Queen Latifah and Samuel Jackson.
“The relationship between BET and Usher spans decades,” said Connie Orlando, BET’s executive vice president of specials, music programming and music strategy. “From his chart-topping hits, electrifying performances, and unforgettable vocals to his signature moves and sound, Usher continues to stand on culture, setting new standards for the music industry and Black Excellence. We look forward to creating an amazing lineup to pay tribute to our global icon.”

The star is also nominated for four 2024 BET Awards — including “Best Male R&B/pop Artist,” “Album of the Year” for “Coming Home,” “Best Collaboration” for the song “Good Good” with Summer Walker and “Best Video of the Year” for that same song.
Clocking more than 80 million record sales in three decades, Usher is one of the best-selling artists in music history, BET said. He’s won eight Grammy Awards and headlined the 2024 Super Bowl halftime show.
In February, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens gave Usher the Phoenix Award, the city’s highest civilian honor. That same day, Atlanta’s Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame revealed his emblem.
Usher was born in Texas and lived in Tennessee as a young child, but he moved to Atlanta when he was 12 and has strong ties to the city.
The BET Awards air live on Sunday, June 30, on BET at 8 p.m. ET.
