Mitski, or Mitski Miyawaki, is an indie rock musician who has had a meteoric rise to fame over the course of the last decade.
Since the release of her 2012 album Lush, she has released six studio records and three EPs and has become massively successful — both on social media and with critics. As of October, the hashtag #Mitski on TikTok has garnered over 5.9 billion views, and former president Barack Obama even included her single “The Only Heartbreaker” in his list of his favorite songs of 2021.
To complement the release of her latest record The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, the 33-year-old singer-songwriter is heading on tour — and tickets go on sale Friday.
Who Is Mitski?
Born to a Japanese mother and American father in Japan, Miyawaki began her career in music at Purchase College’s Conservatory of Music. The singer-songwriter has remained extremely private about her upbringing and personal life. Although Lush and her subsequent record Retired from Sad, New Career in Business were well-received, she began to attract wider audiences with her album Bury Me at Makeout Creek in 2014.
She has released her past three records — Be the Cowboy, Laurel Hell and her most recent record — to great critical acclaim, and all three have charted on the Billboard 200. New York Magazine‘s E. Alex Jung described Miyawaki as “an artist whose music feels like being ushered into a private opera house of melodrama.”
